The Materials and Medicine Behind Anima Pacha Drums
I currently work with the medicine of deer and water buffalo, and I hope to soon expand my offerings to include reindeer and, possibly, goat hides. Each animal carries its own unique energy, wisdom, and teachings, and I approach every drum with deep respect for the spirit of the being that has made its creation possible.
Most of the deer rawhides I use are sourced here in the UK. In the absence of natural predators such as wolves, bears, and lynxes, deer populations have grown significantly, placing increasing pressure on local ecosystems. As a result, deer culling has become one of the management methods currently used throughout the country. While the meat often enters the venison trade, many of the hides are sadly discarded. I feel deeply called to honour the spirit of the animal by ensuring that no part of its life is wasted. Transforming these hides into sacred ceremonial tools is, for me, an act of gratitude and reverence. Through this process, the spirit of the animal is given a new purpose, continuing its journey by sharing its medicine, wisdom, and strength with those who work alongside the drum.
I also source hides from trusted suppliers beyond the UK when necessary, always ensuring that they come from ethical and responsible sources. The welfare of the animals involved is of great importance to me, and I approach this work with awareness, integrity, and compassion.
Every drum is created within a sacred and intentional space. Before beginning the process, I take time to ground myself, connect with the spirit of the drum, and offer gratitude for the materials entrusted to me. These drums are not simply pieces of art or handcrafted objects; they are born through presence, prayer, and devotion. Each one carries a part of my heart and reflects the love, respect, and care that I strive to bring into this work.
Creating shamanic drums has become far more than a profession or a creative practice. It is a calling - a soul mission. It is my way of sharing the love I hold within and offering others a sacred companion that may support them through ceremony, meditation, healing, celebration, and remembrance. To witness these drums finding their homes and becoming part of someone's personal journey is one of the greatest honours of my life.
A Note on Vegan Drum Options
I am often asked whether I offer vegan shamanic drums. At this moment in time, it is not something I currently provide, and I feel it is important to explain why.
Most vegan drum alternatives available today are made from synthetic materials or plastics. While these options avoid the use of animal products, they often come with a significant environmental cost. Plastic-based materials can take hundreds of years to break down and leave a lasting footprint on the Earth - something that does not align with my values or the ethos behind Anima Pacha Drums.
The hides I use are ethically sourced and completely biodegradable, allowing the drums to naturally return to the Earth at the end of their lifespan. For me, honouring the natural cycle of life and minimising our environmental impact is deeply important. I believe there is a profound difference between working with materials that have been respectfully sourced and utilising products that contribute to long-term environmental pollution.
That being said, I remain open-hearted and curious. I continue to explore alternative options and would genuinely welcome a reliable, sustainable, and truly eco-friendly vegan material that aligns with the values of this work. Unfortunately, I have not yet found an option that I feel comfortable offering with integrity and confidence.
I understand that this may be disappointing for some, and I sincerely apologise if I am unable to meet your needs at this time. However, I feel it is important to remain honest and stay true to the principles that guide this path. Should a suitable alternative become available in the future, I would be more than happy to explore it further.
Until then, I choose to continue creating drums in a way that honours both the animals and the Earth - with gratitude, respect, mindfulness, and love.
I remain deeply grateful to the animals, the land, my teachers, and the many people who have entrusted me with creating these sacred tools. It is with humility and an open heart that I continue to walk this path - one drum at a time.
